When most people think of New York City, they think of the
Statue of Liberty, the
Empire State Building,
Times Square, and
Pizza Rat! Regardless of how much beauty and history are associated with NYC, it is also synonymous with a plethora of pests (Mice, rats, roaches, and bed bugs!). Have you ever wondered why New York City has so many dang pests? There are several reasons why starting a pest control business in NYC is so profitable.
Let's face it, there is simply not enough space in NYC for everyone to live, so we literally live on top of each other. When your front door is only a few feet away from your neighbor's front door and your hallway has more people walking through it than a McDonald's during lunchtime, it's easy for these pests to spread in an apartment building. If a neighbor has bed bugs, there's a good chance you'll get them as well. Because mice can run through buildings' walls, they may be able to travel from your neighbor's apartment to yours! A simple way to keep rodents and pests at bay is to install a door sweep under your apartment door. This will keep any curious pests out for good!
Pests feed on the trash left at the curb by high-rise apartment buildings, restaurants, and office buildings on a daily basis. The New York City Department of Sanitation issues new trash regulations on a regular basis to combat rodent and pest issues, but the pests always win. The NYC Department of Sanitation recently issued a new regulation limiting the amount of time commercial garbage can be set out in the street in order to reduce the amount of time trash sits out in the street, but this has not made a noticeable difference in the rat population in NYC. The rodents' behavior patterns with their human counterparts will always change. Even as of recent, coronavirus events have caused many restaurants to close down which has increased the rodent population in more residential areas to find newer and more steady sources of food.
Many of NYC's avian friends live in tall buildings such as sky scrapers and high rise apartment buildings. Birds such as starlings, sparrows, crows, and, more famously, pigeons prefer to live and hide on the tops of buildings because they are out of reach of most predators and people. It's difficult to keep birds away from building eaves, window ledges, and rooftops. Many management companies will hire pest control companies to install deterrents on the tops of buildings, but it will be an uphill battle because birds will always try to find another place to land. Bird droppings can not only cause eye irritation, but they can also carry and spread disease. Bird mites are most commonly spread when birds nest on top of window air conditioners or ventilation systems. The most effective way to keep birds away is to not feed them.
