Other Pests

Globally there are roughly 300 pounds of insects per person, New York City and New Jersey has more than their fair share of these. The bottom line is, there are many bugs and with their long history and rapid breeding cycles, many have become resistant to over-the-counter pesticides meaning all to often professional pest control services are needed.

In NYC and NJ we love the summer; it's the time for cookouts, pool parties, and gatherings with friends and neighbors. Unfortunately we aren’t the only ones who look forward to the festivities. Wasps, Ticks, and Mosquitoes thrive in these conditions.

Then winter rolls along and many insects including Ants, Silverfish, and Beetles search for a warm spot to populate (meaning our homes and work places). Praying mantids, ladybugs, and some species of moths also come inside for a form of hibernation called “overwintering". You may not see one during the colder months and then suddenly be infested when their biological clock wakes them up in the spring. This process can also take place during times of drought.

Rats, mice (and the fleas they can carry), roaches and bed bugs are among those that can be a pain all year-round. With such an array of potential issues, it is important to keep your home or business pest-free. Here are some of the other creatures New Yorkers find bugging them:

  • Spiders: With over 50 species, they range from the tiny Sac spider to the giant Wolf. Though rare, in 2010, an apartment was overrun by the poisonous Brown Recluse.
  • Silverfish: Although many of us would not consider a bug that can be squashed with the lightest touch a pest, they can do some damage. They can chew holes in paper, cloth, and upholstery, leaving yellow stains in their wake.
  • Camel Crickets: Though we may enjoy their soothing chirp at night, that doesn’t mean we want to share our space with them. They can damage clothes, carpets and even wood.

Flies: Does it ever feel like the annoying housefly multiplies whenever you squash one? That may not be physically possible, but over a 5-month span a mating pair could produce 190 quintillion offspring. You may want to keep that fly swatter close by.
