There are over 2,000 ant species worldwide with around 42 of those varieties living in New York City and New Jersey. Some of those species are invasive having hitched rides to get here. That means you’ll see ants in medians and sidewalks, as well as on the very top story of a high-rise. They have countless ways of sneaking into your home, from tiny holes and slender cracks, poorly sealed weather stripping, slits in window covers, air vents and open chimneys. You’re most likely to see them in your kitchen and your bathroom, where they have access to food and water. They spread those pathogens along your floors and walls, over your countertops, and on most surfaces they touch.

Carpenter Ants will even burrow through your walls to get closer to any moisture. Those excavators aren’t eating the wood like termites, but they do just as much damage with their tunneling, and over time can render a building dangerous and uninhabitable.

Their bites can be unpleasant, leaving behind itchy red welts and even landing some in emergency rooms with severe allergic reactions. Some species of ants have other defense mechanisms. The Acrobat and The Odorous House Ant emit a foul odor when crushed. Argentine Ants develop enormous colonies underneath carpets that overwhelm opponents. Thief Ants have been known to attack other species, even stealing their young.
